The Hellenic League for Human Rights (HLHR) expressed its support on Friday for any Turkish nationals who may request political asylum in Greece, adding that the government’s decision to block the asylum grated to one Turkish officer is incompatible with support for human rights.
In its press release, HLHR said the government’s decision to appeal for a cancellation of the asylum offered to one Turkish officer «is incompatible with the policy to protect human rights» and expressed certainty that the administrative justice will rule on the issue unaffected by any political expediency.
«HLHR will continue to support any Turkish citizens who, persecuted for their political beliefs, have requested asylum in our country and declares its intention to intervene, if necessary, in any legal proceedings, in order to ensure that it is recognized that Turkey is at present not a safe country for those who are being persecuted of their (actual or alleged) opposition to the existing political regime,» the NGO said.
